Among the many monuments of medieval Azeri architecture that have survived until today, the most striking is Icheri Shekher (the Inner City). This is the old quarter of Baku, which has attracted the attention of travelers, artists, historians, and tourists throughout the centuries.
Having taken its shape over many centuries, the quarter today includes a number of unique historical monuments, and is quite deservedly called "the Acropolis of Baku". Within the quarter, the visitor can see the slender minarets of mosques, caravanserais, Turkish baths, vast underground reservoirs, and the legendary and romantic Maiden Tower.
